Automated Scientific Research
Scientific discovery shouldn't be bottlenecked by manual processes. We're investigating how AI can accelerate research through automated literature review, hypothesis generation, and experimental design.
The Opportunity
The volume of scientific literature is growing exponentially—over 3 million papers are published annually. No researcher can keep up. Meanwhile, promising hypotheses go unexplored, connections between fields remain undiscovered, and the pace of scientific progress is limited by human bandwidth.
AI offers the potential to change this. By automating literature synthesis, identifying promising research directions, and even conducting experiments autonomously, we can dramatically accelerate the pace of scientific discovery.
A Growing Field
We're not alone in seeing this potential. Several pioneering organizations are pushing the boundaries of what's possible in automated science:
Future House
A nonprofit building AI agents to automate research in biology. Their multi-agent system "Robin" recently achieved the first AI-generated scientific discovery, identifying a therapeutic candidate for age-related macular degeneration.
Leap Laboratories
Building a "discovery engine" for data-driven scientific discovery. Their approach has helped scientists make novel discoveries 100x faster than traditional methods, from materials science to meteorology.
The AI Scientist
An open-source system from Sakana AI for fully automated scientific discovery. The AI Scientist v2 generated the first workshop paper written entirely by AI and accepted through peer review.
Our Work: Synthetic Science
We're developing our own approach to automated scientific research, focused on Canadian research priorities and compliance requirements.
Research Directions
Automated Literature Synthesis
Building tools that can ingest, understand, and synthesize findings across thousands of papers—identifying gaps, contradictions, and promising directions that human researchers might miss.
Hypothesis Generation
Using AI to generate novel, testable hypotheses by finding unexpected connections across disciplines and datasets.
Experimental Design Automation
Developing systems that can propose and optimize experimental designs, reducing the iteration time from hypothesis to validated result.
Why Canada?
Canada has world-class research institutions, strong privacy regulations, and a growing AI ecosystem. We believe Canadian-led automated science research can set global standards for responsible, privacy-preserving scientific AI.
